I recently attended a seminar titled “LEADERSHIP ” at one of the big 4 auditing firms.

The basic discussion was around EQ – Emotional Intelligence.

One of the interesting observations was that this technology was not readily accepted in the workplace.

Not surprising.

Business is about the survival of the fittest. And this is all sourced from reptilian thinking which essentially translates into ”dog eat dog”.

Stressful? No doubt! The EQ stuff is still considered to be the weak alternative and very much in the domain of ‘touchy feely’. Most managers strive for ‘my-way-or-the-highway’ approach.

What did surprise me was that recently Time Magazine ran a cover article on MINDFULNESS.

Without boring you with the details the basic observation was that the less stressful a person is the more functional they become. It was proposed that one of the best stress reducers was the use of mental exercises. Needless to say meditation was one of the recommended methods.

To dismiss mindfulness as just the  latest self-help fad underscores its value and misses the point as to why it is gaining acceptance with those who might otherwise dismiss mental exercises closely aligned with meditation.

Distraction is the pre-eminent condition of the modern era and mindfulness training is the ideal response. The term meditation has all sorts of interpretations but essentially mindfulness is about giving full attention to one single activity. It might be tasting the flavour of an apple or simply focusing on ones breathing.

The result is a relaxing calmness. And this has greater potential to access deeper creativity.

In the near future, I will not be surprised to find that meditation and mindfulness will become just as much part of the corporate curriculum  as the daily visit to the gym.

Mindful Based Stress Reduction (MBRS) was first developed in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, a MIT scientist. Today there are more than 1,000 MBRS practitioners spread through 30 countries around the world.

How this all fits into EQ?

The more centered you are within yourself, the easier it is to control emotions and communicate in a calm and connecting way.

The result?

Probably a happier bunch of people, feeling valued and loved……and more productive!
